Kamil Zayas Pérez, one of the creators of the independent audiovisual project El4tico, wrote a handwritten letter on April 17 from the Penal Instruction headquarters in Holguín, in which he denounces that the Cuban regime only knows how to throw into a cell anyone who has the courage to speak up for the truth.
The letter was published on Facebook by Paula Amador Lobón, who pointed out that it has been over 70 days since the young man was detained: "No one should be imprisoned for expressing their thoughts. Kamil and Ernesto must be freed, and Cuba must stop being the estate of the Castros."
Kamil and his companion were arrested on February 6, 2026 during an operation in which their equipment and work materials were also confiscated. Since then, both have been in provisional detention facing charges of propaganda against the constitutional order, as reported by the Holguín Prosecutor's Office.
In the text, Kamil explains the purpose of El4tico: "It has emerged to address and analyze the colorful and imaginative narrative presented to us in every political speech, which is filled with points we disagree with, and it has been our duty to highlight them as they arise."
What began as a humble little room has been transformed into a reference space for many Cubans seeking critical analysis outside of official media.
In their defense, the family presented a habeas corpus petition, which was accepted by the Tribunal of Holguín, though it did not yield a favorable outcome for the detainees.
For his part, Ernesto, the other member of the project, refused to record a video of remorse and retraction, according to sources close to his family.
International pressure has also increased. The American diplomat Mike Hammer spoke with the families of the prisoners and expressed the need to continue insisting that they should be released. Additionally, Amnesty International has also called for their release, joining the call from human rights organizations around the world.
