The New Zealand Defence Force carried out a high-risk medical evacuation from the McMurdo Station in Antarctica, successfully transporting a patient who was working with the United States Antarctic Program (USAP).
The operation was publicly acknowledged by the Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in New Zealand, David Gehrenbeck, who issued an official statement emphasizing the necessity of such missions.
"The New Zealand Defence Force has carried out another high-risk medical evacuation from McMurdo Station in Antarctica, safely bringing home a patient who was working with the U.S. Antarctic Program. These missions are never routine: they require precision, courage, and top-notch capability every time," noted Gehrenbeck, who expressed gratitude for New Zealand's investment in defense capabilities.
The mission, described by experts as daring, dangerous, and profoundly brave, involved a approximately 19.5-hour operation in the extreme weather conditions typical of the Antarctic winter.
This type of operation falls under the bilateral cooperation between both countries in the frozen continent, recently strengthened when the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet visited New Zealand to strengthen ties in defense and Antarctic logistics. This collaboration has historical roots in the Operation Deep Freeze, active since 1955, which coordinates U.S. military support for scientific activities in the region.
