The United States Department of State announced this Tuesday the launch of a limited edition of commemorative passports featuring an image of Donald Trump on the inside cover, along with his signature printed in gold letters, as part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the country's independence.
The design, whose exclusive was published by Fox News, features a portrait of Trump taken during his second inauguration, surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and the Stars and Stripes flag.
The president's signature appears at the bottom of the same page in gold, while the back cover features the 1777 American flag with the number "250" centered between the 13 original stars.
Another interior page features the historic painting of the Founding Fathers signing the Declaration of Independence.
The spokesperson for the State Department, Tommy Pigott, confirmed that there will be a "limited amount" of these documents available at the Passport Agency in Washington for any citizen who requests them, on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
"As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is set to release a limited number of specially designed passports to commemorate this historic occasion," stated Pigott.
According to reports, the print run will be approximately 25,000 units.
The launch is scheduled for July 2026, coinciding with the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the documents will maintain all standard security measures without changes to processes or fees.
The fact is historically unprecedented. Edward Kolla, a professor at Georgetown University and an expert in the history of passports, pointed out that no U.S. passport has ever included the image of a sitting president, and that no head of state appears on the passports of any country in the world.
Kolla described the proposal as "absurd" and reminded that U.S. passports are issued in the name of the Secretary of State, not the president.
The current design, adopted in 2021, only includes generic patriotic motifs like Mount Rushmore, without individual portraits.
This passport is part of a broader trend during the Trump administration to imprint its image and name on federal government institutions and services.
Among similar initiatives is the replacement of the winning photo from a public contest at Glacier National Park with a close-up of Trump on the annual America the Beautiful pass in December 2025.
The United States Mint is also seeking approval to mint a 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump to commemorate the same anniversary.
This includes the renaming of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the redesign of the Rose Garden at the White House, the demolition of the East Wing to build a large ballroom, and the project for a 250-foot tall triumphal arch near Arlington Cemetery.
The administration has also launched the Trump Gold Card —an investor visa—, the Trump Accounts, the TrumpRx site for discounted medications, and the warships called "Trump-class".
The new passports will be available starting in July at the Washington Passport Agency, at no additional cost, while supplies last.
