Transfer and wait for deportation: New twist in the case of the Cuban detained by ICE after 50 years in the U.S.

The case of Eddie Gattorno, the Cuban detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after more than five decades of living in the United States, continues to evolve amidst uncertainty and family distress.

Her daughter, Danielle Anguiano, reported in a new update posted on social media that her father has been relocated once again, this time to the Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, Louisiana, where he may remain for at least three months while awaiting his deportation to Mexico.

“She believes he will be there for at least three months while waiting to be deported,” explained the young woman, who has documented the case since her father's detention, which occurred during a routine appointment with immigration authorities.

The new center, as reported, does not represent an improvement in conditions. On the contrary, it was stated that the facility has a "long history of abuse," which raises concerns for the family, who had already warned about the treatment received by Gattorno at his previous detention site in Alabama.

According to the information they have gathered after consulting with others in similar situations, the family faces a limited legal scenario. Anguiano explained that, since their father already has a deportation order, there is virtually no immediate course of action available.

"If 180 days have passed and he is still detained, only then will we have the opportunity to fight against it," he stated.

In the meantime, he reported that the authorities can keep him detained for up to six months, even without having committed any crime at the time of his arrest. "It really is a broken system," he lamented.

The family also expressed frustration at the inability to expedite their departure to Mexico, an option that, although it would involve deportation, they consider preferable given the current conditions of detention.

The case of Gattorno has sparked a strong reaction within the Cuban community, not only due to his long-term residence in the United States but also because of the contrast between his daily life—recently marked by his daughter's wedding—and his current situation within a immigration system that continues to face criticism for its practices and conditions.

For Danielle, the priority remains the same: that her father regains his freedom as soon as possible, even if it means starting over outside the country where he has lived most of his life.
