A young Spanish woman traveled from Spain to Havana to reunite with her Cuban partner after three months of separation, and the emotional video she posted on TikTok went viral in less than 24 hours with over 110,600 views.
Melanie Vidal, creator of the travel channel @meloviajo and originally from Barcelona, summarized the adventure in 55 seconds: "3 months of waiting, 17 hours of travel, and 1 reunion that almost didn't happen."
The trip was about to go off the rails before it even took off. At six in the morning, already in the taxi heading to the airport, Melanie arrived with plenty of time but was met with unexpected news: her flight was overbooked and it wasn't certain that she would be able to board.
"I'm watching my plane, unsure if I'll be able to get on," she recounted in the video. Faced with uncertainty, she made an unusual decision for herself: "I joined the line for boarding, something I never do, and I was able to get on."
She finally managed to board the plane, taking the last available seat, and she didn't mind: "Here in the last row of the plane but very happy." After a stopover in Madrid, she boarded the direct flight to Havana while watching movies to ease her impatience.
Upon landing in the Cuban capital, her partner—a Havana musician named Yainer—had been waiting for her at the airport for over an hour. "Finally, the reunion became a reality: there he was, waiting for me for more than an hour. We embraced, it was incredible," the creator described.
The video was posted at the direct request of her followers, as Melanie herself indicates in the post's description. The audience's response was immediate: over 3,100 likes and 166 comments in just a few hours.
This story is set against a well-established trend on TikTok of emotional reunions between Cubans and foreigners that have amassed millions of views. Cuban airports have become a recurring setting for these moments, such as the return of a Cuban woman after three years that also moved thousands of users this week.
Love stories between Cubans and Europeans that develop from tourist trips to the island often become complicated due to migration challenges and the economic crisis facing Cuba. A Cuban woman in Miami experienced a surreal reunion with her boyfriend in February, and the embrace of two Cuban women after two years apart touched the community in April.
The account @meloviajo, which has over 150,000 followers on TikTok and 120,000 on Instagram, has been documenting Melanie's relationship with Cuba and with Yainer since 2023. The channel combines travel content with heartfelt chronicles and has established itself as one of the leading voices in the niche of romantic tourism on the island within Spanish-speaking social media.
The video closes with a promise that hints at more content to come: "Stay tuned because this is just the beginning."
