The Miami-Dade County court postponed on Friday the judicial proceedings against Alfredo Carballo González and Ariely Álvarez Cabrera, accused of the crime against Daylon Fleitas, a young Cuban resident of Hialeah, after no agreement was reached between the defense and the prosecution and due to the absence of both defendants in the scheduled virtual hearing.
According to Telemundo, the judge rescheduled the case for August 12. During the session, the prosecution presented a new charge against Carballo: armed robbery, which adds to the previous accusations of second-degree murder with a weapon and tampering with physical evidence. Through a public defender, Carballo submitted a written plea of "not guilty" to the new charge.
The postponement caused deep pain for the victim's family, who attended the court with the hope of facing the accused in person. Carmen, Fleitas' mother, expressed her frustration to the media: "I feel really bad. My family is down. He was the happiest one in the house; he shouldn't have to be in this place now."
Marlon Fleitas, brother of the deceased, described the process as "a long and tedious road" but reaffirmed his confidence in the judicial system. He also revealed that while the family was searching for Daylon, Carballo transferred 2,500 dollars via Zelle, claiming it was part of the outstanding debt. "At first, I didn't think he was capable of such an atrocity, but I always had a gut feeling that he was involved," he stated.
Beanis Colón, the victim's girlfriend, noted that the postponement is an additional blow to the family and indicated that Fleitas and Carballo were close friends, to the extent that the victim had financially supported him in the past.
The crime occurred on August 3, 2025 in a truck yard in Medley. Fleitas went to the location to collect a debt of $10,000 that Carballo owed him. Surveillance cameras captured Carballo attacking Fleitas inside a truck and then dragging the body to a blue recycling container. The body was found on August 9, 2025, in a wooded area near the Everglades, with multiple stab wounds.
After the crime, Carballo tampered with Fleitas’ phone, sending false messages to the family claiming that the victim was fleeing to Mexico to evade immigration authorities. In reality, it was Carballo and Álvarez who fled to Mexico along with their five-month-old baby.
Álvarez was extradited to Florida in September 2025 and released under house arrest after paying a bond of $200,000, which caused outrage in the family. Carballo was captured in Mexico and extradited to Miami, where he pleaded not guilty on February 19 and requested a jury trial. Both remain in custody at the Miami-Dade County Jail without the possibility of bond.
"We will never have peace again, because they ripped a piece of our family away from us," declared Carmen, the mother of Daylon Fleitas, nearly a year after the crime.
