A Yutong bus covering the Havana-Guantánamo route was involved in an accident early this morning on the national highway, at the section known as the Puente de las Cajas, between kilometers 172 and 176, in the municipality of Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos province.

The incident occurred around 2:40 a.m. this Sunday and left a total of 48 people receiving medical attention at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Provincial Hospital and the Paquito González Cueto Pediatric Hospital, both located in the provincial capital.

According to the official media 5 de Septiembre, among the injured, seven are minors, including three infants.

According to the risk classification, three patients are in red code —critical condition— while the rest remain in yellow code.

Ling Denise Santeiro, director of the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital, confirmed the information and specified that "fortunately, there are no reported fatalities."

The first affected individuals were initially taken to the Aguada de Pasajeros Hospital, where emergency protocols were immediately activated, before being transferred to larger capacity centers in Cienfuegos, according to official data released by the provincial Health Directorate.

The accident occurs on one of the most dangerous stretches of Cuban roadways. On November 7, 2025, another Yutong bus lost control at kilometer 183 of the same highway, also near Las Cajas, resulting in two fatalities and 18 injuries.

Just weeks later, on December 22, 2025, a new accident at kilometer 188 of the same route claimed the lives of the two bus drivers and left at least 13 injured, including two minors.

In January 2025, a similar tragedy in Cienfuegos also resulted in fatalities and numerous injuries at kilometer 209 of the national highway, near Aguada de Pasajeros.

This pattern of accidents falls within a national upward trend: in 2025, Cuba recorded 750 fatalities in traffic accidents, up from 634 in 2024, according to data from the National Road Safety Commission presented in February of this year.

In less than six months, there have been at least three mass bus accidents on that same stretch of the national highway, all occurring at night or in the early morning, and all involving long-distance interprovincial transport vehicles on routes between Havana and the eastern part of the country.
