Two people died and 18 others were injured when a bus from the company Transtur lost control and crashed today at kilometer 183 of the National Highway, near the Las Cajas settlement, in the municipality of Aguada de Pasajeros, in the province of Cienfuegos.

The accident occurred shortly after two in the morning this Friday, when the driver of the Yutong vehicle, which was traveling the Guantánamo–Havana route, lost control and veered off the road, reported on Facebook by the first secretary of the Communist Party in Cienfuegos, Armando Carranza Valladares.

Provincial and municipal authorities immediately activated response and assistance protocols.

“The response was timely and effective,” affirmed the official, who added that all those involved are being attended to by medical and emergency teams.

According to official information, two people died at the scene and 18 were injured, one of them critically.

The injured were taken to provincial hospitals.

The incident adds to the list of mass accidents recorded in recent weeks on Cuban roads, many of which are linked to the poor condition of the highways, driver fatigue, and inadequate technical conditions of state transportation.

A truck was nearly involved in a fall from a bridge at kilometer 285 of the National Highway, after one of its front tires exploded in an accident that occurred on the night of October 29.

The blowout of the front right tire caused the truck to lose control, although fortunately there were no injuries, just material losses.

On September 23, a double traffic accident near the town of Santa Elena on the national highway of Santiago de Cuba resulted in several injuries and caused chaos on the road due to the involvement of multiple vehicles.

A traffic accident on September 20 near Paradero de Camarones, Cienfuegos province, resulted in the death of Diosmiley Llerena Suárez, the first secretary of the Communist Party in the municipality of Cruces, and Efrén Delgado, who was driving the official vehicle they were traveling in.

Traffic accidents continue to be one of the leading causes of deaths and serious injuries in Cuba.

From January to August of this year, 502 people lost their lives in traffic accidents. This figure represents 80% of the fatalities from this cause for all of 2024, indicating an increase in mortality due to traffic incidents.
