The Republican congressman Carlos Giménez delivered two strong messages this Thursday from his official account on X, reaffirming his belief that Cuba will achieve freedom despite those whom he believes have not risen to the occasion.
"Cuba will be free despite the complicity and lack of solidarity from many so-called friends," wrote the legislator for District 28 of Florida. A minute later, he published a second message: "Cuba will be free because of the heroic struggle of our prisoners, our martyrs, and our people who have never stopped resisting communist repression."
Both publications, accompanied by the flags of Cuba and the United States, arrived at a time of documented repression: only in April 2026, 27 arbitrary detentions and 339 human rights abuses were recorded on the island, according to a report from PanAm Post published the same day.
The context is even more serious when considering that Prisoners Defenders reported in February a historic record of 1,214 political prisoners in Cuba, 467 of whom have serious medical conditions and 47 have mental disorders without proper treatment.
Giménez, the only member of the U.S. Congress born in Cuba, came to the country at the age of seven following the establishment of the communist regime in 1961 and has made the Cuban cause the focus of his legislative activities this year.
His words about the "supposed friends" point to a direct criticism of international actors or politicians who, in his view, have not shown enough solidarity with the Cuban people against the dictatorship of Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The tone of the messages is consistent with his recent statements. On April 23, Giménez insisted that Cuba must be a friend of the U.S. and warned, "Cuba poses a security threat to the United States. President Trump has said enough is enough."
On April 15, when referring to the pressure strategy, the congressman used a culinary metaphor: "We need to keep applying maximum pressure and let it simmer for a while, see how it unfolds."
In March, following the regime's announcement to release 51 individuals as a "gesture" towards the Vatican, Giménez demanded from Congress the release of all political prisoners with slogans such as "Down with the dictatorship" and "Homeland and Life."
During that same period, the congressman warned that the Cuban regime is running out of time, writing in Fox News that the dictatorship is in a "terminal phase" if international pressure continues.
On April 18, on the 65th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs, Giménez expressed his hope of celebrating the upcoming New Year in Havana: "I believe so, that next year, the New Year in Havana. Let's see, if God willing."
