A private entrepreneur from Sancti Spíritus known as Maikel, owner of the business Comidas Domicilio Sabor Cuban, donated 20 completely free meals to the humanitarian project Hermanos de la Calle, a solidarity initiative that assists vulnerable individuals in this Cuban province.
The announcement was made by the project administrators, Nelys Valdés and Yureibys Torresilla, who publicly expressed their gratitude: “Hearts like these are what is needed in difficult times.”
Torresilla confirmed the donation in the comments of the post: "Notice that tomorrow Maykel Comidas Domicilio Sabor Cuban will give away 20 free meals."
The message from the collective described the gesture with these words: "Cuban flavor, great seasoning, and much love for those who need it the most."
The community on social media responded with an avalanche of supportive messages. "Thousands of blessings for Maikel. May God multiply them with good health and many good things for everyone," wrote a follower identified as Magdalena Hernández.
Another user, Tamara Bernal Delgado, added: "This work will not stop, it will not stop. May God bless you always."
Hermanos de la Calle has been operating in Sancti Spíritus since at least 2024 and is primarily funded by donations from Cubans living abroad.
In November, the project provided a solidarity lunch for over 400 people, and in December of that same year organized a meal for approximately 90 vulnerable individuals.
In January 2025, Torresilla led the rescue of an elderly man abandoned in the cold in the Escribano neighborhood, and in April 2026, the group distributed condensed milk and coffee to homeless people thanks to donations from Cubans in the United States.
Maikel's donation occurs in a context of acute food crisis. According to a recent survey, one in three Cuban households experienced hunger in 2025, with 33.9% of families reporting severe food shortages.
Eighty percent of Cubans also believe that the current situation is worse than the Special Period of the 1990s, according to data from the Food Monitor Program published in March 2026.
In that scenario, private entrepreneurs have emerged as supportive actors filling gaps that the State does not cover. Private entrepreneurs from other provinces have also provided humanitarian aid in emergency situations, solidifying a trend of citizen solidarity in response to the crisis.
"The administration, Nelys Valdés and Yureibys Torresilla, will be eternally grateful for this very supportive gesture," concluded the collective's post.
