The official page of the El Purial Popular Council, in the municipality of Holguín, published an alert on Facebook this Tuesday to locate the relatives of an elderly woman who was found disoriented in the community of El Dajao.
The woman says her name is Onelia Cepeda Díaz and claims to reside in the Ciudad Jardín neighborhood, in the city of Holguín.
According to the elderly woman herself, she has been absent for six days from her home, which would place her disappearance around May 6th.
The published photographs, taken at 8:51 AM on this Tuesday, show a woman with short gray hair and dark skin, dressed in a beige shirt, a red tank top, and blue denim shorts, sitting on concrete blocks in a setting of dirt and vegetation, with a black bag and a bottle among her belongings.
The Popular Council reported that it is working together with the Health Directorate of the area to provide medical care and locate the family: "We are collaborating with the Health Directorate in the area for their care and family location."
The alert was issued just minutes after the photographs were taken.
The case adds to a documented pattern of disappearances of elderly individuals in Holguín. In February 2024, an elderly woman with a mental disability known as "Nene" was missing for several days in the same province.
In October 2023, an elderly woman who had been missing for a month in Holguín was found alive, and in September of the same year another Cuban had been missing for 20 days in the same province.
In December 2022, the family of Lilia Zamora Valera, an elderly woman with memory disorders, filed a report with the National Revolutionary Police following her disappearance in Holguín.
According to the OGAT Annual Report 2025, presented in April of this year, there were at least 40 disappearances of women, girls, and boys in Cuba during 2025, of which at least nine involved mental health conditions or cognitive decline, predominantly among elderly women.
Cuban families systematically turn to social networks and community structures like popular councils to raise alarms about disappearances, due to the lack of institutional mechanisms that ensure a quick and effective response from the State.
Those who recognize Onelia Cepeda Díaz or have information about her family can contact the El Purial People's Council through their page on Facebook.
