A traffic accident at kilometer 291 of the National Highway resulted in two fatalities and a woman in critical condition this Thursday, in the section corresponding to the municipality of Placetas, Villa Clara province.

The incident occurred around 4:30 in the afternoon when a private Jeep Willy with license plate P 204139 went off the road due to a slope, according to Ondrey Candelario Ozuna, director of CMEP Radio Placetas.

One of the fatalities was identified as Dioelmis Roche Cuenca, 51 years old, originally from Moa, Holguín province. The second deceased was a male who remained unidentified at the time of the initial reports.

The survivor, Migdalia Miranda Hernández, also from Moa, Holguín, was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries and was transferred to the Emergency Intensive Care Unit of the Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital in Santa Clara, the main referral hospital in Villa Clara.

The three occupants of the vehicle received initial medical attention at the hospital in the municipality of Placetas. The fact that they were all from Moa, Holguín, suggests that they were on a long-distance trip when the tragedy occurred.

Doctor Víctor Manuel Cabrera Díaz, the municipal health director in Placetas, confirmed that the medical teams were working to stabilize the injured patient. The Ministry of the Interior is investigating the causes of the incident.

This accident adds to a series of recent tragedies on the same road. On May 1st, a truck overturned at kilometer 297 in Villa Clara after falling into a hole.

On May 3rd, a bus was involved in a mass accident in Cienfuegos that left 48 injured and three in critical condition.

The deterioration of the road conditions, potholes, unmarked slopes, and the aging vehicle fleet have been identified as recurring factors in the increasing accident rate on the National Highway, the main artery that connects all the provinces of the country.
