The political prisoner Carlos Alain Abrahantes Valdés, 31 years old, was beaten "brutally" until he lost consciousness in the Provincial Prison of Camagüey, Kilo 8, according to reports from two inmates of that facility who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals.

The assault occurred last Monday when a common inmate identified as Ignacio González Galván taunted Abrahantes Valdés, and when confronted, began to beat him until he lost consciousness.

The young man's mother, Desireé Valdés, confirmed in a Facebook live session that her son suffered a fracture of the nasal septum and had to undergo surgery.

In addition to the fracture, the assailant caused a laceration on the shoulder that also requires surgical intervention, according to the mother, who reported this after communicating with her son.

The doctor who initially treated Abrahantes Valdés warned the guard watching over him that "his injuries were very serious, posing a threat to his life, and that it was necessary to take him to the hospital immediately," according to Desireé Valdés.

At the time the complaint became public, the young man was still hospitalized in the prison, and it remains to be clarified whether two other prisoners were involved in the beating, as his mother indicated.

What was documented is the minimal punishment imposed on the aggressor: González Galván was placed in a punitive regime for less than 24 hours and then transferred to Detachment 7 of the same prison.

The political prisoner Danisbel Labrada Morales, confined in that facility, reported that upon arrival, the aggressor began to shout Castroist slogans such as "Long live Fidel!" and "Long live the Revolution!", which reinforces suspicions that the aggression was orchestrated or encouraged by the prison authorities.

Abrahantes Valdés, a native of Cienfuegos, was violently arrested on July 10, 2023, and accused of setting fire to warehouses of the Ministry of the Interior, although his family asserts that he was elsewhere at the time of the events.

He was sentenced to eight years of deprivation of liberty for "sabotage" —a crime against state security— by the Court of Crimes against State Security of the Provincial People's Tribunal of Villa Clara.

Your case is registered in the database of Cuban Prisoners Defenders, an NGO founded in Spain for the defense of human rights of individuals deprived of liberty for political reasons.

This case falls within a systematic pattern of aggression against political prisoners in Cuban jails. In the past month of April, political prisoner Félix Navarro Rodríguez was brutally beaten in the Agüica prison, in Matanzas, by Major Noslen Pedroso Sotolongo and was sent to a punishment cell.

In June 2025, José Daniel Ferrer reported being beaten on two occasions in Mar Verde prison, by common inmates specifically transferred to assault him.

Kilo 8 itself has a documented history of violence: in January 2025, Ulises Rodríguez Machado, 73 years old, died in that facility after a beating attributed to a prison officer, with allegations of cover-up by the authorities.
