The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, visited the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, this Monday, accompanied by his wife Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio, during a cultural and personal stop on his first official tour of the Asian country as the head of American diplomacy.

The visit was documented by the U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, who shared a photograph of the group in front of the monument with the message: "What a wonderful experience to return to the iconic Taj Mahal with Secretary Rubio, Jeanette, and Robert Gabriel. An impressive symbol of India's extraordinary heritage and craftsmanship."

The images show the couple posing on the marble bench in front of the reflecting pond—known as Hauz-i-Kausar— the most recognized photo spot of the complex. Rubio wore a navy blue suit with a U.S. flag pin on the lapel; Jeanette looked elegant in a light blue dress.

Visiting the Taj Mahal as a couple carries a particularly symbolic connotation. The monument was built as an act of eternal love. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned its construction between 1631 and 1653 in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away during the birth of their fourteenth child.

The UNESCO declared the Taj Mahal a World Heritage Site in 1983, describing it as "the jewel of Muslim art in India."

Its construction involved more than 20,000 workers and artisans, combining influences from Islamic, Persian, and Indian architecture. It is regarded as one of the most visited and photographed monuments on the planet.

That Rubio chose this symbol of marital love to share with Jeanette —with whom he has been married since 1998 and with whom he has four children— adds a personal and romantic dimension to a journey that is essentially diplomatic in nature.

Jeanette Dousdebes, daughter of Colombian immigrants born in Miami, has accompanied the Secretary of State since the first day of the tour, which began last Saturday in Kolkata with a visit full of symbolism to the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, where Rubio paid tribute to the legacy of Mother Teresa.

The tour also included a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reinforced the strategic partnership between the two countries.

«India and the United States will continue to work closely for the global good,» Modi stated. Rubio also conveyed an invitation from President Donald Trump to visit the White House.

The stop in Agra represents the cultural component of the journey before the final diplomatic commitments in New Delhi, where on Tuesday the meeting of foreign ministers of the Quad —the strategic forum comprising India, the United States, Australia, and Japan— is being held, marking the highlight of the official visit.
