A young Cuban woman who shares her life on TikTok under the name @daniela._mir posted an emotional video about her family farewell before emigrating from the island, featuring a table full of traditional food prepared with effort and love by her loved ones.
"My family wanted to bid me farewell in the best way they know, with love, unity, and plenty of food made from the heart," the protagonist recounted in the video, which summarizes in a few minutes what thousands of Cuban families experience every day when one of their own leaves.
The meeting featured some of the most beloved dishes from the Cuban table: panetela, congrís, pork, and crispy chicharrones.
Her neighbor Lissé, as she described, "with that lovely affection she always has," gave her two plans as a farewell gesture.
Her father, who knows her tastes well, specially prepared the cream that she loves: "He knows how much I like it and made it just for that day, and it was super delicious," she recounted.
Her sister's nephews also joined the celebration, arriving with a case of beer.
"Between laughter, conversations, photos, and hugs, we shared every minute as if we wanted to stop time," described the young woman, who traveled with her daughter.
Seeing her daughter enjoy that day was, in her own words, what gave her the strength to face the departure: "Seeing her smile gave me strength."
In the face of the scarcity that defines daily life in Cuba, gathering ingredients such as pork, chicharritas, or flour for a cake today represents a significant family effort and a concrete act of love.
"In Cuba, although much is lacking, love is never absent from the table," summarized the protagonist with a phrase that resonated with those who have lived similar experiences.
The farewells of Cuban emigrants documented on TikTok have become a distinct genre within Cuban social media content, generating tremendous empathy both among the diaspora and those who remain on the island.
The exodus depicted in these scenes is of historical proportions: since 2021, more than a million Cubans have left the island, driven by the economic crisis, power outages, shortages of food and medicine, and the lack of prospects under the dictatorship.
Approximately 30% of those who emigrated between 2021 and 2025 were aged between 15 and 34, according to recent data, which exacerbates the accelerated aging of the population remaining on the island.
A survey released in April 2026 revealed that 93% of Cubans surveyed would leave "tomorrow" if they could, and that 78% of those living in Cuba want to emigrate or know someone with that intention.
Daniela closed her video with a phrase that encapsulates the sentiment of thousands of families separated by the exodus: “This farewell was not a good-bye, it was a we’re waiting for you.”
