Bety, a young Cuban émigré, surprised her mother in Cuba after three years apart, capturing the emotional reunion in a video she posted this Monday on TikTok.
The one-minute clip captures the exact moment when the mother embraces her daughter again, a poignant instant that the creator herself described with the words: "I love you, Mom, surprising my mom after three years."
The comment section was filled with crying emojis, hearts, and praying hands, featuring responses from users with flags of Cuba, the United States, and other countries, reflecting the reach of the Cuban diaspora on social media.
This reunion is part of a trend that frequently occurs on TikTok: emigrated Cubans returning unexpectedly to the island to embrace their family members after years of separation. On May 11, Ray Obón Séne surprised his mother in Cuba after four years without seeing her. "My mom couldn't believe that after four years I was going to hug her again," he said at the time.
On May 26, another Cuban traveled from Houston to celebrate a birthday with her mother on the island, in another video that also touched the online community.
In February, a Cuban surprised his mother after nearly four years in a reunion that followed the same emotional pattern.
Behind each of these videos lies a harsh reality: economic difficulties, immigration procedures, travel costs, and entry and exit restrictions cause many emigrants to go for years without being able to return to Cuba.
The massive Cuban migration wave, intensified since 2021, has left thousands of families separated for years, turning each reunion into a deeply symbolic event that the Cuban community shares and celebrates on social media.
Between 2022 and 2024, over 600,000 Cubans arrived in the United States, a historic figure that illustrates the extent of the family dispersion experienced by the Cuban nation, which is now spread across dozens of countries.
