A Cuban identified as Pedro Solano returned to Cuba after 20 years of absence and documented the emotional reunion with his mother in a video published on TikTok last Sunday.
When Solano walked out the airport door, two relatives ran into his arms, including his mother. The emotion of the moment was so intense that the lady couldn't hold on and fell, almost fainting.
"I'm here now," the Cuban said to comfort her, as they embraced each other in tears. "Mom, calm down, we're here now. How are you? Are you okay?" he is heard saying in the video.
The reunion is linked to the Isla de la Juventud, a special Cuban territory located south of Havana, according to the labels in the video published under the account @solanoferrat.
Separations lasting two decades, like that of Solano, are particularly significant: mothers who saw their young children leave reunite with them now as adults, with an entire life having passed in the distance.
This type of reunion is part of a viral trend sustained on TikTok during 2025 and 2026, where Cuban emigrants document their return to the island after years of separation. Other similar cases have touched thousands of followers from the diaspora, who relate to these stories.
A Cuban residing in Uruguay starred in a reunion in May that surpassed 407,100 views, while other videos of hugs in Cuban airports have generated hundreds of empathetic comments.
Behind each of these videos lies a story of forced exodus due to the crisis in Cuba: blackouts, shortages of food and medicine, and an economy devastated by 67 years of communist dictatorship.
More than a million Cubans have emigrated since 2020, with over 250,000 in just 2024, marking the largest exodus in the recent history of the island. The high cost of tickets —which can exceed 1,000 dollars— further prolongs separations, causing many emigrants to spend years, or even decades, unable to return.
The video by Pedro Solano, lasting two minutes and 49 seconds, captures in just a few images the human weight of that reality: a mother who almost faints from emotion upon seeing her son after twenty years, and a man who can only repeat to her, through tears, "we are finally here".
