Two Cuban citizens were arrested this Tuesday in Cancun after being identified as alleged participants in an attack that was captured on video and sparked a strong reaction on social media in recent days.

According to the local media Novedades Quintana Roo, the arrest took place in front of the facilities of the National Migration Institute (INM), located on Nader Avenue, in Super Block 5, following a surveillance operation carried out by the Municipal Police with the support of the C5 video surveillance system.

According to additional reports, those arrested are said to be connected to a fight that took place last Sunday night near the Plaza de Toros in Cancún, on Bonampak Avenue. The images shared on social media show several men physically confronting each other in the central median of the road, in a scene that sparked outrage among residents and internet users.

According to preliminary information, authorities located the suspects around 3:00 PM and proceeded to arrest them without any reported use of force. They were subsequently handed over to the competent authorities, who will determine their legal status.

Reports indicate that two Mexican citizens were assaulted during the incident. Additionally, in one of the videos shared on social media, a woman can be seen attempting to intervene to stop the fight, although she ends up falling to the ground amidst the altercation.

The widespread dissemination of the images fueled an intense discussion on digital platforms, where some users expressed concern over the increase in violent episodes in tourist areas of Cancun. Several posts also linked the case to the impact that such events can have on the image of the primary tourist destination in the state of Quintana Roo.

So far, the authorities have not disclosed the identity of the detainees nor have they indicated if they will face formal charges for assault or other related offenses.

The case has drawn particular attention within the Cuban community residing in Cancun, one of the largest among the foreign populations in that Mexican city, due to the fact that the incident has spurred comments and reactions that extend beyond those directly involved and impact the entire migrant community.

This episode is the third high-profile incident in less than two months involving Cuban citizens in altercations in Cancún. On May 28, the Cuban couple Rigoberto and Yudelmis remained under migration protection following an operation in Supermanzana 23, after a Mexican reported being bitten by their dog and physically assaulted.

In April, residents from several superblocks in Cancun protested outside the Benito Juárez town hall demanding greater security and intervention from the INM following the release of another video showing a fight involving Cubans.

The accumulation of incidents has sparked a public debate in Cancun regarding the immigration status of Cubans residing in the city, while the Cuban community in Mexico has publicly taken a stance on these cases. With four individuals now under investigation and a new video circulating, the authorities in Quintana Roo are under pressure to resolve the case swiftly.
