Rodolfo Falcón Jr. announced his retirement from competitive swimming at the age of 25, bringing an end to a 20-year career dedicated to the sport.

The Havana swimmer made the announcement through an emotional message on his Instagram account, where he expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his career.

"The end of a beautiful chapter has arrived, 20 years dedicated to this sport. I have to thank my parents for instilling in me a love for swimming, my sister for her unwavering support, and all my coaches from my training days to my final stage," wrote the athlete.

In his message, Falcón Jr. emphasized that swimming allowed him to "see the world and make friends everywhere," and specifically mentioned his teammates both in Cuba and Puerto Rico, where he competed in his final years with the Dolphins of the University of the Sacred Heart in the Intercollegiate Athletic League.

"I have been able to fulfill the dreams of that excited child who said he would be just like his parents. I am retiring from sports in an active way, but sports will continue to beat in my heart," he concluded.

The retirement surprised the specialized Cuban press.

The newspaper Juventud Rebelde titled its article "Falcón Jr., an Abrupt Farewell," pointing out that the decision came "perhaps at his peak athletic moment."

Falcón Jr. is the son of the legendary Rodolfo Falcón Cabrera, considered the best Cuban swimmer of all time and an Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter backstroke at Atlanta 1996, where his compatriot Neisser Bent also won the bronze in a historic performance for Cuba.

The young swimmer followed in his father's footsteps and reached the pinnacle of global sports by competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 1,500 meters freestyle, qualified through World Aquatics' universality invitation.

Among his most notable achievements is the gold medal in the 10 kilometers of the 2023 Pan American Open Water Series, held in Puerto Rico, with a time of two hours and two minutes, achieved despite a shoulder injury.

He also participated in the 2022 Melbourne Short Course World Swimming Championships, where he improved his personal best in the 800 meters freestyle, and at the Doha 2024 World Championships along with other Cuban swimmers in the 1,500 meters freestyle.

Outside the pool, Falcón Jr. combined high-performance sports with an impressive academic career: he maintained a perfect GPA of 4.00 in the Business Development and Financial Management program at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, and in his first year in the Inter-University Athletic League, he accumulated 13 medals, seven of which were gold.

Only six months before his retirement, Juventud Rebelde had dedicated a flattering profile to him titled "Like a Good Son of a Cat...", in reference to his athletic lineage, after an outstanding performance in an international tournament that raised expectations about his future in high-level swimming.
