With 48 teams qualifying for the , which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the tournament presents an interesting statistical curiosity: the average height difference between the shortest and tallest team exceeds eight centimeters.
At the bottom appears Saudi Arabia, with an average height of 178.4 centimeters, the lowest among all participating teams. Close behind are South Africa (178.8 cm), Qatar (179.4 cm), and Mexico (179.5 cm), teams that have historically prioritized speed, mobility, and technique over physical strength.
It is particularly striking that Argentina, the current world champion, is also among the teams with the smallest stature, averaging 179.7 centimeters. "Far from representing a definitive disadvantage, the Argentine case demonstrates that technical quality, tactical organization, and individual talent tend to carry much more weight than centimeters when it comes to competing at the highest level," the analysis indicates.
Argentina won the title in Qatar 2022 by defeating France in a penalty shootout, paradoxically being one of the lowest-ranked teams in that tournament.
In the middle of the ranking, several of the favored teams are positioned. Portugal measures 181.5 cm, Spain 181.7 cm, Morocco 182.7 cm, Brazil 182.8 cm, and the United States 183.4 cm, blending physical attributes and technique in similar proportions.
Above 184 centimeters, there is a group of European teams with a great tradition in aerial play: England (184.2 cm), Scotland (184.5 cm), Croatia (184.8 cm), France (184.9 cm), and the Netherlands (184.9 cm).
Even higher, Belgium (185.76 cm), Germany (185.52 cm), and Sweden (186.2 cm) complete the group of the most physically impressive teams.
The absolute leadership is shared by Norway and Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an average height of 187.2 centimeters per player, according to the height ranking of the 2026 World Cup. "It is no coincidence that many of the tallest teams come from Northern and Central Europe, regions historically associated with physically imposing footballers," the analysis points out.
Norway arrives at the tournament with Erling Haaland (1.94 m) as its key player, placed in Group I alongside France, Senegal, and Iraq. Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose historical symbol is Edin Džeko, also has a squad of 26 players of considerable stature.
At an individual level, the tallest player in the tournament is the Austrian goalkeeper Florian Wiegele, measuring 205 centimeters, while the shortest is the Panamanian César Yanis, standing at just 160 centimeters: a difference of 45 centimeters between the two extremes of the championship.
The history, however, puts the significance of the measuring tape into perspective. Brazil won five titles with teams known for their technique, Spain conquered the world in 2010 by focusing on possession, and Argentina lifted the Cup in Qatar 2022 with one of the shortest squads in the tournament.
"Football remains a sport where talent, tactical intelligence, and the ability to compete weigh much more than a tape measure," concludes the analysis. When the ball starts rolling in North America, Saudi Arabia will try to prove that height is not everything, while Norway and Bosnia will look to turn their nearly 1.90-meter average into an additional advantage on the pitch.
