The United States Coast Guard rescued five people on Sunday in two separate operations conducted by its Southeast District in the Florida Keys and in South Carolina, with no injuries reported in either incident.
The first rescue occurred at 5:45 PM when the Key West Sector received a 911 call transfer from the Monroe County Sheriff's Department reporting a capsized vessel with three people in the water, approximately five miles south of Little Palm Island, in Little Torch Key, Florida.
The crew of the Marathon Station located the three castaways and transported them, unharmed, to Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key.
The vessel is anchored in the sea. The Coast Guard issued a maritime safety notice regarding its location while the owner coordinates efforts to recover it.
The third-class petty officer Dalton Henry, helmsman of the Marathon Station during the operation, emphasized the speed of the response and urged sailors to take basic precautions.
"Our crew responded quickly and efficiently to locate the three individuals," Henry stated. "Sailors should always wear a properly fitted life jacket, as emergencies can occur with little notice."
In parallel, on the same day, a crew from the Charleston Station rescued two stranded individuals on Morris Island, South Carolina, after their vessel—a Scout brand sport boat with multiple Mercury outboard motors—ran aground on that uninhabited barrier island.
Both castaways were brought to shore without injuries, and no contamination was reported in the area.
