What started as a rumor has become reality: Bad Bunny and papa León XIV held a private meeting this Monday at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, as officially confirmed by Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, following the exclusive report by RTVE about the private audience at the Bernabéu.

The meeting took place at the end of the event of the diocesan community of Madrid, which gathered between 70,000 and 80,000 people at the Real Madrid stadium.

The Puerto Rican singer arrived accompanied by his family and a small group of people, whom the pontiff greeted briefly before leaving the venue.

According to RTVE, several photographs were taken with mobile phones, although there is only one official image, captured by the papal entourage.

As of the publication date of the news, the communication teams from both parties were assessing the most appropriate time to release the images on the media or platforms they deem suitable.

The meeting was described as "the best-kept secret of the entire papal visit" to Madrid, honoring the proverbial secrecy of Vatican diplomacy.

Weeks of discreet management

The meeting was not improvised. According to RTVE, Bad Bunny's management agency reached out weeks ago to the Spanish Episcopal Conference to arrange some kind of appointment between the artist and the Pope, taking advantage of their presence in the capital at the same time.

It was even suggested that Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio participate in the massive mass on June 7 at the Plaza de Cibeles, in front of over a million people, although ultimately the logistics did not allow it.

The Archbishop of Madrid and Vice President of the Episcopal Conference, José Cobo, had publicly hinted that the meeting was possible: "Madrid has a lot to offer. There are people who do not oppose, but rather create bridges, and there can be bridges. They would not be antagonistic things," he pointed out, adding with a prophetic tone: "Surprises are surprises."

Two worlds, one city

The coincidence of both figures in Madrid for several days generated enormous anticipation. Bad Bunny was in the capital with his world tour, with 10 concerts scheduled at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium between May 30 and June 15.

Pope Leo XIV, for his part, was making his first apostolic visit to Spain in 15 years—the first visit by a pontiff to the country since Benedict XVI presided over World Youth Day in 2011.

The Pope himself joked about the situation during the flight from Rome to Madrid, when asked by CNN correspondent Christopher Lamb: "I think many would go to see Bad Bunny, but I also believe there will be some here who came to see the Pope. And that says a lot."

The meeting also has a personal dimension: Bad Bunny made history at the 2026 Grammys by becoming the first Spanish-speaking artist to win the Album of the Year award with a completely Spanish-language album, and he grew up in a Catholic environment in Puerto Rico, where he served as an altar boy and sang in the church choir.

León XIV, born in Chicago but with a deep connection to Latin America from his time as bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, is remembered by his Peruvian parishioners as someone who participated in festivities and danced salsa, according to the biography of the pontiff written by Elise Ann Allen.

After his visit to Madrid, the Pope departed for Barcelona, while Bad Bunny continues his tour in the Spanish capital until June 15.
