The first photovoltaic charging station in the province of Holguín has completed its civil construction phase and is preparing to go into operation.
The project is carried out by the small private company Frenas Conmigo, whose sole partner and founder, Álvaro Grass González, confirmed that the first stage included the renovation of the property and the installation of solar panels in the Alcides Pino neighborhood of the Holguín municipality, in an area that previously operated as a fuel service center.
In this first phase, the installation will feature 32 kW in inverters and 60 kW in batteries.
Once the technological connection is complete, the charging station will provide services for tricycles, bicycle taxis, and electric motorcycles, operating 24 hours a day.
In addition to charging services for electric vehicles, the center will offer free amenities to the community: charging for cell phones, rechargeable lamps, and facilities for cooking food, with areas of the venue specifically designated for that purpose.
Grass González specified that the facility will also feature a specialized store for high-demand electrical supplies that are difficult to find in the informal market, such as switches, cables, insulating tape, and outlets.
In a planned second phase, capacity will expand to 60 kW for inverters and 150 kW for batteries, which will also enable support for electric vehicles.
The initiative takes on special significance in the context of the energy crisis affecting Holguín, one of the most impacted provinces in the country, with an electrical availability of only 70 MW against a demand of 225 MW and blackouts that have exceeded 24 consecutive hours.
The Lidio Ramón Pérez thermoelectric plant, located in Felton and a key pillar of the electricity supply for eastern Cuba, has experienced recurring breakdowns and was completely disconnected from the National Electric System in February 2026, causing a total blackout in Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo.
This solar power plant would be the first in Eastern Cuba operated by a private micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise, marking a milestone in the diversification of the private sector towards renewable energy on the Island.
The trend of solar charging stations —independent photovoltaic charging stations not connected to the national power grid— has spread throughout the country since the first was inaugurated in Santa Clara on April 5, built in just nine days by the Gomate Local Development Project and the small and medium-sized enterprise Eléctrica Total.
After Santa Clara, Matanzas projected nine solar charging stations and Havana announced one in the heart of Vedado, at the intersection of 23 and J.
Juan López, commercial technician at Frenas Conmigo, had anticipated the social impact of the project when announcing the start of construction: "It will greatly benefit the nearby communities and those traveling in electric vehicles who need to charge them, now that the energy situation has become practically critical."
Frenas Conmigo, founded in 2022, holds the status of National Vanguard Collective, granted by the Central Workers' Union of Cuba for its provincial leadership in the repair of brake and clutch systems.
