Cyle Larin rescued a point for Canada in the 78th minute, avoiding defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the , held this Friday at BMO Field in Toronto in front of a crowd that arrived at the stadium with high expectations to see their team play at home.

Bosnia opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a goal from J. Lukić, which left the home crowd stunned. The goal came at a time when Canada was still trying to settle into the match, and the visitors capitalized on their moment to take the lead.

For more than fifty minutes, the Canadians pressed without finding a way to score against a well-organized and very aggressive Bosnia in defense: the Balkan team committed 19 fouls throughout the match, compared to Canada's ten.

The final stretch of the first half brought the hottest moment of the match. E. Demirović received two consecutive yellow cards in the 44th and 45th minutes, resulting in his expulsion from the field. In that same 45th minute, Lukić also received a yellow card, accumulating two cards in the match, although he was able to continue until halftime before being substituted in the 62nd minute.

With Bosnia at a numerical disadvantage after the break, the Canadian coach made a bold move in the 61st minute with three simultaneous substitutions: Liam Millar, Jonathan David, and Tajon Buchanan came on. The introduction of David, one of the standout names in the Canadian attack, was particularly anticipated by the fans. The pressure from the home team increased significantly, and Larin appeared in the 78th minute to score the equalizing goal.

The match statistics clearly reflect Canadian dominance: 60% possession compared to Bosnia's 40%, 12 shots against eight, four on target versus three, and nine corners to four. However, the hosts took too long to convert that control into a goal, which almost cost them the match.

Larin, with 31 international goals and the all-time leading goalscorer for Canada in qualifiers, scored the most important goal of the match in front of his own fans. The forward, born in Brampton, Ontario, and currently with Southampton FC, had not scored during the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar 2022, but this time he did not miss when his team needed him the most.

Canada is participating in this World Cup as the host country—alongside the United States and Mexico—and will play its group stage matches in Toronto. This marks only the third time the Canadian national team has played in a World Cup, following Mexico 1986 and Qatar 2022, where they were eliminated in the group stage. For Bosnia, this is their second World Cup appearance after Brazil 2014.

With this result, both teams start Group B with one point each. The next match in the group will see Qatar face Switzerland this Saturday, June 13, while Canada will play again on June 18 against Qatar, a game in which the Canadians will need to secure all three points to keep their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 alive in a tournament being held in front of their home crowd.
