Ysel Fumero Tuero, a political prisoner from the protests on July 11, 2021, passed away on Saturday in Caibarién, Villa Clara, at the age of 51, allegedly due to pulmonary edema, according to Martí Noticias.

Fumero Tuero had served a sentence of two years and six months of imprisonment after being tried for the crimes of assault and public disorder, charges that arose when he attempted to prevent police from hitting a woman during the protests in Caibarién.

His case became emblematic from the very beginning: he was detained and physically assaulted while handcuffed, and during the trial, the prosecution refused to accept as evidence the videos that documented the excessive use of force against him.

His daughter Yumey Fumero had declared at the time that the family considered him a mere observer of the events, who did not shout slogans but rather stepped in to defend a woman from police violence.

During his imprisonment, Fumero Tuero suffered cruel treatment and isolation, as reported to Martí Noticias by his fellow activist Carlos Michael Morales.

Both were incarcerated in La Pendiente prison in Santa Clara, and were later transferred to the "Alambrada de Manacas" in the municipality of Santo Domingo, where they remained in isolation for nearly two months.

The authorities denied him most of the prison benefits, forcing him to serve his sentence in full, and in the final stage, he was transferred to a forced labor camp in Remedios.

The community of Caibarién remembers him as a noble and upright man, whose arrest caused outrage after the brutal beating and physical abuses committed against him were made public.

His companion Morales, sentenced to two years and ten months for the same actions, was released in July 2024 after 27 days of a hunger strike.

The death of Fumero Tuero adds to a growing list of former and current political prisoners from 11J who have died in recent years: Luis Miguel Oña Jiménez died in February 2026 at the age of 27 after suffering a cerebral ischemia in prison, and Ernesto Brieva Sempé was confirmed dead in prison in May 2026 by the organization Cubalex.
