Scotland made a hard-fought return to international football with a victory. The Scots defeated Haiti 1-0 at the United States, on the first matchday of Group C of the 2026 World Cup, with a goal from John McGinn in the 28th minute that proved sufficient to secure the three points in a match that was more contested than the scoreline suggests.
The goal came from a Scottish attack that ended with a rebound that left the Haitian goalkeeper helpless. McGinn, the standout player of the match, was the scorer of the only goal and remained on the field until the 83rd minute, by which time Scotland was comfortably managing their lead.
Statistics tell a more balanced story. Haiti dominated possession with 54% compared to Scotland's 46%, and had more shots: 13 shots against nine.
However, the Caribbean team only managed to hit the target once, while the Scots did so on two occasions, which clearly illustrates why the score leaned towards the European side.
Haiti also accumulated more fouls —23 against 19— and three offsides compared to one from Scotland. Regarding cautions, J. Bellegarde (Haiti) received a yellow card in the 39th minute, A. Hickey (Scotland) in the 46th, and F. Curtis (Scotland) in the 90th, during added time.
Scotland managed the second half with five substitutions, carefully maintaining their lead without giving up space. Haiti tried to respond with their own changes — Deedson in the 61st minute, Isidor in the 76th, and Providence in the 85th — but they were unable to create enough pressure on the opposing goal to force an equalizer.
The victory carries a double historical weight. Scotland returns to a World Cup for the first time since France 1998, 28 years later, after qualifying on November 18, 2025 by defeating Denmark 4-2 in Glasgow.
Haiti, for its part, was playing its first World Cup match since 1974, having been absent for 52 years, having secured its ticket as the leader of its CONCACAF group by defeating Nicaragua 2-0 that same November.
The context of the group adds more value to the three Scottish points. In the other match of the day, Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1, leaving Scotland as the provisional leader of the with three points. Brazil and Morocco share second place with one point each, while Haiti sits at the bottom of the table with no points.
The format of the 2026 World Cup, with 48 teams and groups of four, qualifies the top two teams from each group along with the best third-placed teams for the next round, keeping Haiti's hopes alive if they can recover in the upcoming matches.
For Scotland, on the other hand, the start couldn't have been better: three points, a clean sheet, and the lead in the most challenging group in their recent World Cup history.
