The Cuban singer Leydi Lach published a video on TikTok in which she reflects on the strength that Cuban emigrants gain from having survived the dictatorship, stating that those who have lived on the island "can handle anything" anywhere in the world.
In the clip, the artist born in Havana and based in Miami starts with a straightforward declaration: "I am Cuban, and I can tell you that we Cubans, those of us who were born and have lived for years in Cuba and know what the system in Cuba is like, say that we can handle anything."
Lach describes Cuban emigration not as a free decision, but as an imposition of the regime: "We have had to do it out of obligation because, yes, to be able to live in Cuba you have to be a communist or you have to keep quiet."
The singer also points out the consequences of dissent: "You can't express yourself or say who you are, what you feel, and that you don't agree with the system, because they throw you in prison for twenty years or more."
In the video, Lach paints a stark portrait of daily life on the island: "There is no electricity, no water, no food; you have to survive there, there is no transportation. There is no time to think about anything, there is only time to think about how you will get the basics."
That extreme experience is, according to her, what forges the resilience of the Cuban emigrant: "We have had to be our own psychologists, we have had to rise up in the midst of all those difficulties. When we leave Cuba, we move forward; no one can stop us."
Lach acknowledges that distance does not erase the pain: "You leave Cuba, but Cuba continues to hurt, because you have family there, because you see how the situation is, because you cannot completely detach yourself from Cuba even if you have left."
Lach, who publicly identifies as anti-communist and has over 507,900 followers on TikTok, ended his message with a statement of hope for the future: "This is the year of liberation. We must move forward, and everything will turn out well. We truly deserve a free Cuba."
