A young Cuban identified on TikTok as @keylih.z arrived in a car during a heavy downpour at her relatives' home in Cuba and starred in an incredibly emotional reunion with her grandparents after three years of separation.

The video, published last Monday, captures the moment when the young woman gets out of the vehicle in the rain and joyfully embraces her loved ones, in a scene that has captivated thousands of users on social media.

The description that accompanied the clip says it all: "after 3 years, a hug like this >>>>".

The background song reinforces the emotional weight of the images with verses that resonate throughout the Cuban diaspora: "There were so many things I left behind / That I can't forget, no / My friends, my first love."

Other verses of the musical piece complete the portrait of someone returning with a heart divided between two worlds: "I am going to return / I am going to walk down the street of my neighborhood / I am going to visit the friends I bring / I am going to feel sad and I am going to be happy / Because despite everything / There is nothing like my people."

The reunion of @keylih.z is part of an ever-growing trend on TikTok during 2025 and 2026, directly fueled by the massive emigration that has fragmented hundreds of thousands of Cuban families.

Between 2021 and 2024, nearly 1.79 million people left Cuba driven by the economic crisis, chronic blackouts, shortages of food and medicine, and the political repression of the regime.

By 2024, 38% of Cuban families had at least one member living abroad, a figure that makes reunions—especially surprise ones—a major emotional and media phenomenon.

The element of the downpour adds a dramatic component that further enhances the emotionality of the scene, in line with another reunion in the rain that went viral in May and garnered over 16,500 views.

This week, another Cuban identified as @geysii_ms starred in a viral family reunion that also moved thousands of followers on the platform.

Last Monday, a video was also published featuring a Cuban who returned after four years and reunited with his mother, father, and brother in another clip that sparked a wave of empathetic comments.

Isaura Moreno also surprised her mother in Cuba with a bouquet of sunflowers on June 2, in another reunion that became a trend.

TikTok has established itself as the space where the Cuban diaspora collectively processes the pain of separation and the joy of reunion, with videos that serve as a shared catharsis for millions of people around the world.

The song chosen by @keylih.z to accompany her return precisely captures what so many Cubans who had to leave one day feel: "I am 100% Cuban / I am from the neighborhood."
