A Cuban experienced a moment that took eight years to arrive: embracing his father and sister in the lobby of a luxury hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, right on Father's Day. The emotional reunion was captured in a video posted on TikTok on Monday by the account @sabri_and_ya1000, identified as "Sabrina and Yamil's page."
"You see your dad and your sister after 8 years. Father's Day. In Punta Cana," wrote the protagonist in an Instagram story that accompanied the post.
The 41-second clip depicts a meeting on the outskirts of an all-inclusive resort—recognizable by its white columns with golden details, marble floors, and tropical vegetation—while the song "Cuando nos volvamos a encontrar" plays, with lyrics that speak of the end of separation and the long-awaited embrace.
The protagonist, with an athletic build and tattoos on his arms, wore the distinctive blue bracelet of the all-inclusive hotels in the area. In the video caption, he summed up the significance of the moment in a single sentence: "8 years later... a dream come true."
The post also tagged @lafamiliacubana, a profile dedicated to documenting the stories of the Cuban diaspora on social media.
The reunion occurs within a phenomenon that turns Punta Cana into a land of hugs for thousands of families separated by migration.
The Dominican Republic functions as a neutral point: Cubans who emigrated to the United States or other countries cannot easily return to the island, and their relatives in Cuba face enormous obstacles in obtaining a U.S. visa. The Dominican migration policy, which is more accessible for Cubans, along with direct flights from Havana and Miami, make these meetings possible.
In just the first six months of 2025, over 43,000 travelers holding Cuban passports visited the Dominican Republic, many with the sole purpose of reuniting with their loved ones. The specialized packages for these trips —which include visa, flight, transportation, and all-inclusive hotel— range from 1,800 to 2,500 dollars per person, according to agencies such as RISA Travel and Yes Travel, which have developed specific offers to reunite Cuban families.
It is not the first time a reunion like this has gone viral. The singer Osmani García met with his parents in Punta Cana in 2023 and described the moment as "the greatest of my entire life." Jacob Forever did the same with his son after two years of separation, and actress Dianelys Brito embraced her brother in that same destination after 11 years.
The case of this anonymous Cuban, however, resonated with thousands of people who see their own story in that embrace: that of a family divided by the dictatorship and the necessity to emigrate, finding in the beaches of the Dominican Republic the only possible place to be together again.
Father's Day was celebrated this year on Sunday, June 21, in the United States and much of Latin America — a date that coincides with the reunion — although in the Dominican Republic, the holiday is observed on the last Sunday of July.
