The United States ambassador to Spain, Benjamín León Jr., 81 years old, will become a father for the fourth time alongside his wife Mavileibys Campa Felipe, 38 years old, who publicly displayed her advanced pregnancy last Thursday during a reception organized by the U.S. Embassy in Madrid to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The news was revealed through images of the event, which was attended by the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida. During the walk down the red carpet, Mavileibys —also known as Mavi León— placed her hand on her belly several times, hinting at the joyful moment the couple is experiencing, reported Hola.

The baby, who will be born before the end of this year, will be the first child together for both of them and the fourth for León, who already has three adult children from his previous marriage: Silvia, Lourdes, and Benjamín III.

The couple, who have an age difference of 43 years, got married in 2025 in a ceremony held in Key Biscayne, Florida. Since they settled in Madrid in February 2026, Mavi has accompanied the ambassador in all his official engagements, including the presentation of credentials to King Felipe VI.

Benjamín León Jr. was born in 1944 in the province of Oriente, Cuba, and emigrated to the United States in 1961 at the age of 16, fleeing from the Cuban Revolution, with only five dollars in his pocket.

Based in Miami, he built one of the largest healthcare empires in South Florida. Together with his father, he founded the Cuban Association Clinic, which obtained the first Health Maintenance Organization license in the state of Florida in 1973, and which the family sold to UnitedHealthCare in 1994 for approximately 500 million dollars.

He later founded Leon Medical Centers, a network specialized in care for the elderly, which now serves over 44,000 patients in Miami-Dade with more than 2,300 professionals.

Mavileibys is also of Cuban origin, which means that both share roots and a close bond with the Cuban-American community in Miami. Those who know the couple emphasize the mutual admiration that exists between them, and León himself has described this stage as "one of the most exciting of his life."

President Donald Trump appointed León as ambassador on January 3, 2025, describing him as "a highly successful businessman, horseman, and philanthropist." The Senate confirmed his appointment on December 19, 2025, and he was sworn in by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on February 10, 2026.

Since his arrival in Madrid, León has maintained an active diplomatic agenda that includes meetings with Cuban opposition figures such as José Daniel Ferrer to discuss the state of freedom in Cuba, in addition to negotiations with the Spanish government regarding defense matters.

Mavileibys's pregnancy comes at a time of maximum public visibility for the couple, who balance their diplomatic responsibilities with a new personal chapter that will make the Cuban-American ambassador a father for the first time at the age of 81 alongside his current wife.
