President Donald Trump promised this Wednesday that gasoline prices in the United States will return to levels seen before the armed conflict with Iran, which he referred to on his Truth Social account as his "very successful 'excursion' in Iran."
In the message published on July 1, Trump acknowledged that prices at the pump are decreasing, but "not as quickly as they should," and took the opportunity to announce a business initiative related to the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.
"The prices of oil are falling FAST, and gas prices are also going down, but not as quickly as they should," wrote Trump, before asserting that "the United States has never been stronger than it is now, and gas prices will soon return to the historic lows that Americans enjoyed before our very successful 'trip' in Iran."
The use of the term "excursion" to refer to the Epic Fury Operation —the joint military campaign of the United States and Israel launched on February 28, 2026, against Iranian nuclear facilities— has generated media attention, as the conflict cost approximately $25 billion and drove fuel prices to historic highs.
Before the conflict, a gallon of gasoline averaged 2.98 dollars nationwide. On May 21, 2026, at the height of the war, it reached a peak of 4.56 dollars per gallon, with crude oil exceeding 125 dollars per barrel, following Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz on March 4, which blocked 20% of the world's oil.
After the Islamabad Agreement signed on June 15, which established a permanent cessation of hostilities mediated by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, prices began to fall. On June 18, the gallon dropped for the first time since March below 4 dollars, reaching 3.999 dollars according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).
This Thursday, the national average of the AAA stands at $3.838 per gallon, still 28% above the level prior to the conflict, with crude priced around $68 per barrel.
In the same message, Trump announced that the chain Freedom Fuel Network will lower fuel prices at 25 gas stations in the Philadelphia metropolitan area on July 3rd, the eve of the national anniversary. "This retailer is taking the initiative, and others should follow suit. They do it because they love the United States," wrote the president, who emphasized that Pennsylvania is "the birthplace of our very special Declaration of Independence."
The initiative comes days after Trump demanded that gas stations lower prices "IMMEDIATELY", setting a target of $2.50 per gallon and warning that "big problems await" those who do not comply. On June 24, he also ordered the Department of Justice to investigate major oil companies for maintaining high margins despite the drop in crude prices.
Experts' projections, however, indicate a slower recovery than what Trump suggests. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent estimated that gasoline could drop to as low as $3 per gallon between June and September 2026, while analyst Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy warned that returning to pre-conflict prices will not happen before early or mid-2027.
