Aly Sánchez shared on her Instagram stories an image that better summarizes than any words how her daughter is recovering: Sophia Balmaseda, 14 years old, walking down the hallway of their home with a black orthopedic back brace, assisted by Aly herself.
"Seeing her walk like this fills my heart. If your son or daughter has gone through spine surgery, please share any tips that could help her," wrote the Cuban presenter alongside the image, turning the moment into a community space where other families could share their experiences.
Sophia underwent spinal surgery at the Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, a leading center for pediatric spinal surgery in Florida, where more than 200 procedures of this kind are performed each year.
This week, Aly broke the silence in a video to thank her supporters for their messages without leaving her daughter's room for a moment: "I’m just stopping by quickly because I don’t want to leave Sophi alone for even a second to thank everyone because I have so many messages, not only asking what happened to the little girl but also praying, and that means a lot to me."
In that same post, she acknowledged that the days had not been easy: "Sophi had major spine surgery, she is recovering, and the days have obviously not been easy."
It was early in the week when she shared the first images from the hospital. Aly described with an honesty that moved thousands of followers how she experienced the hours leading up to the procedure: “I saw her be afraid, ask questions, listen to everything they explained, and still move forward. I saw her go into that operation with a strength that I don’t know where she found, because if I’m honest, I think we were all devastated.”
The contrast with the previous weeks could not be more emotional: just three weeks before the surgery, Sophia graduated with multiple honors in science, music, volleyball, and the Conservatory of Music, and her voice stole the show at the ceremony.
Now, watching her take steps down the hallway of her home while wearing the corset is, for her mother, a lesson in life: "My girl reminded me that being brave is not the absence of fear. It’s moving forward even when you have it."
