A Cuban émigré organized a surprise reunion with her mother on the island and documented it in a video she posted on TikTok, accumulating thousands of views in just a few days.
The protagonist, identified as Lianet González (@lianetgonzlezprez), resorted to a loving deception so that her mother would not suspect anything: she made her believe that she was going to the airport to pick up a package that had been sent to her. What the woman did not imagine was that this "package" was her own daughter.
"I was expecting a package, not knowing that the package was me," Lianet wrote to describe the moment.
This type of surprise at Cuban airports has become a recurring viral trend on TikTok during 2025 and 2026, driven by the pain of family separation experienced by the Cuban diaspora. The concept of the "package"—making relatives believe they are picking up a shipment when in fact the emigrant is arriving—appears time and again in videos on that social network.
Behind each video, there is a story of forced separation. Since 2021, more than 850,000 Cubans have arrived in the United States in what is considered the largest exodus in the recent history of the island, driven by the economic crisis, power outages, shortages, and the political repression of the regime.
This massive diaspora has led to separations that extend from months to decades, and TikTok has become the space where families collectively process both the pain of distance and the joy of reunion.
