Port St. Lucie, Cape Coral, and Gainesville are among the 20 cities with the lowest traffic accident rates in the country, according to the 2026 edition of the America's Best Drivers Report by Allstate, the 18th annual report from the insurer that analyzes driving habits in the 200 most populated areas of the United States.

The study, which was based on claims for property damage filed between January 2023 and December 2024 by insured drivers, represents approximately 10% of the automobile insurance market in the country, providing a statistically significant sample size.

The three cities of Florida and their statistics

Port St. Lucie leads the state's representation by ranking 11th nationally, with an average of 12.5 years between collisions and a 13.1% lower probability of accidents than the national average.

Cape Coral is ranked 14th, with an average of 12.35 years between collisions and a 12.0% lower risk than the national average.

Gainesville closes the trio in 18th place, with 11.88 years between collisions and an 8.5% lower probability of accidents compared to the U.S. average.

The report highlights that "drivers in the highest-ranked cities are up to four times less likely to be involved in a collision than those living in the cities with the worst outcomes."

The national landscape: Brownsville leads, Boston in the background

Nationwide, Brownsville, Texas, retained the top position for the second consecutive year as the city with the safest drivers in the country, with an average of almost 15 years (14.99) between collisions.

The rest of the top 10 is completed by Fort Collins (Colorado), Boise (Idaho), Laredo (Texas), Cary (North Carolina), Madison (Wisconsin), McAllen (Texas), Colorado Springs (Colorado), Eugene (Oregon), and Olathe (Kansas).

On the opposite end, Boston, Massachusetts, once again took the last position on the list, with just 3.76 years between collisions and a 189% higher likelihood of an accident compared to the national average.

Driving behavior, as decisive as the city itself

One of the most noteworthy updates in the 2026 report is the first-time inclusion of aggregated data from Allstate's Drivewise telematics program, which collected information throughout 2025 to identify the habits that most increase the risk of collisions.

The four detected factors are:

-driving 15 miles per hour or more over the speed limit.

- the sudden stops measured per 100 miles traveled.

-the use of a cell phone while driving, measured by the unlocks of the device at the wheel.

-nighttime driving, especially during the hours between 11 PM and four or five in the morning.

Allstate warns that “although traffic conditions vary between cities, the decisions made by each driver behind the wheel have an equal or even greater impact on the risk of a collision.”

The insurer also clarified that the report's findings do not impact individual insurance rates, as premiums are calculated based on multiple risk variables.

A contrast with the traffic crisis that Florida is experiencing

The recognition of these three cities contrasts with the overall road safety landscape of the state.

Fatal accidents due to road rage in Florida increased by 200% between 2023 and 2024, rising from 12 to 36 fatal crashes, while Miami-Dade County recorded 93 accidents and 117 victims in just the first few months of 2026.

Florida is also the second most dangerous state in the country for night driving, with over 1,000 fatalities due to speeding at night between 2020 and 2024.

In response to this reality, the state tightened penalties for dangerous speeding starting July 2025: those who drive 50 miles per hour or more over the limit could face up to 30 days in jail for their first offense.
