The U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, unveiled this Wednesday the first official images of a one-dollar gold coin featuring the face of President Donald Trump and announced that the Mint will begin striking it.

The piece is part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. Bessent stated that its production aims to honor the legacy of freedom and represent a lasting symbol of patriotism. The announcement was also shared on his social media.

On the front, there is a profile of Trump accompanied by the inscriptions "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and the dates "1776-2026." The reverse features an eagle, the number 250, and the Latin phrase "E Pluribus Unum." The Mint had previously published the designs of the commemorative piece.

The coin will be a collectible piece made of 24-karat gold and will have a nominal value of one dollar. Its design has previously received approval from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, allowing it to move forward into the production phase.

The initiative has sparked legal controversy because several federal provisions restrict the representation of living individuals on U.S. coins. According to Axios, members of the Citizens Coin Advisory Committee have questioned the design and argue that it could contradict existing legislation.

The Treasury Department, however, has argued that the coin can be authorized under the special powers granted to create designs related to the country’s semi-quincentennial. The discussion centers on whether those powers allow for an exception to the restrictions applicable to portraits of living individuals.

So far, the authorities have not specified the number of units that will be minted, their release date to the market, or the selling price for collectors.
