An elderly Cuban could not hold back his tears when his granddaughter, who had emigrated to Puerto Rico, came to embrace him after months of separation. The emotional moment was captured in a video published on Tuesday on TikTok by the young woman identified as Yarle1997, and it has moved thousands of people on social media.

The clip, just over a minute long, captures the exact moment when the grandfather sees his granddaughter arrive: he is overwhelmed with emotion, and as they embrace, he can't hold back his tears.

The young woman accompanied the video with a message dedicated to her grandfather that summarizes the purpose of her trip: "There are not enough words to explain how happy I was to be able to hug you again."

"This trip to Cuba had only one purpose in my heart: to see you, to share with you, and to create new memories by your side," wrote Yarle, who acknowledges that distance imposes kilometers, but can never erase affection.

"Seeing you again reminded me that distance can separate us by kilometers, but it can never diminish the affection that connects us," she added in her post, which has garnered almost 9,000 views and over 580 reactions in just a few days.

The journey, in his own words, had no other purpose than the reunion: "Every moment with you is forever engraved in my heart, and I take the memory of your smile as the greatest gift of this trip."

The video closes with a heartfelt plea filled with love and uncertainty about the distance: "I love you with all my heart, Grandpa. I ask God to take care of you, to grant you good health, and to allow me to return very soon so I can hug you again."

This reunion adds to a growing trend on TikTok in 2025 and 2026, where Cuban emigrants document their returns to the island after years of separation. Last May, another Cuban grandfather was left in shock for 30 minutes upon reuniting with his family, in a video that also sparked significant emotion.

The phenomenon reflects the human cost of the largest migratory exodus in recent Cuban history: over 1.4 million Cubans left the island between 2020 and 2024, fracturing thousands of families and separating grandparents from their grandchildren for periods ranging from two to more than six years.

The restrictions imposed by the Cuban regime further exacerbate that separation. Since 2022, the classification of "regulated" has prevented more than 600 individuals from returning to the island, while the economic hardship makes affording a trip an enormous effort for most emigrants.

The emotional impact of that distance has led to extreme situations: a Cuban woman sent her parents in the island clothing of her son infused with his scent so they could "feel" their grandchild from afar, and another mother sent her baby to Cuba so that the grandparents could meet him in person while she remained in the United States due to immigration restrictions.

"Thank you for existing and for being the best grandfather in the world. You will always be a very important part of my life. I love you today, tomorrow, and always," Yarle concluded her message, with words that resonate in thousands of Cuban families separated by the ocean and decades of dictatorship.
