JD and Usha Vance announce the birth of their fourth child

The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, announced this Sunday the birth of their fourth child, a boy named Alec Neel Vance, born at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The announcement came through an official statement bearing the Vice Presidency's seal, signed by both spouses and published on Vance's X account.

"We are very excited to announce that our baby, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our children are thrilled to meet their little brother," reads the statement.

In the same document, the couple expressed their gratitude towards the military medical staff: "The incredible military doctors and personnel at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing. We are deeply grateful for everything they have done for our family."

The birth holds significant historical weight. According to AP News, Alec Neel Vance is the first child born to a sitting Vice President of the United States in over 150 years.

The last precedent dates back to April 1870, when Schuyler Colfax, vice president under Ulysses S. Grant, had his son Schuyler Colfax III.

Before Colfax, only John C. Calhoun —with sons born in 1826 and 1829— and Hannibal Hamlin —with a son in 1862— had been parents while holding the Vice Presidency.

Alec becomes the fourth child of the couple. The three older siblings are Ewan Blaine Vance, nine years old; Vivek Vance, six; and Mirabel Rose Vance, four.

The pregnancy was announced on January 20, 2026, the same day that JD Vance took office as the 50th vice president under Donald Trump's second presidency.

At that time, the couple confirmed that they were expecting a boy by the end of July, and the birth occurred within that timeframe.

The event is consistent with Vance's public positions. In his inauguration speech, the vice president stated, "I desire an increase in the number of babies born in the United States," a pronatalist stance he has consistently advocated since taking office.

Vance, who is considering a run for the presidency in 2028, thus adds a personal milestone that is also recorded in the historical records of the U.S. Vice Presidency.

The White House published an official congratulation on social media following the news of the birth.
