The president Donald Trump celebrated on Monday the birth of the fourth child of Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance, with a message posted on his Truth Social network in which he described the newborn as "a perfect baby for the wonderful Vance family".
The little one, Alec Neel Vance, arrived in the world on Sunday at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, as reported by the EFE agency.
The vice president himself announced the birth through an official statement bearing the Vice Presidency's seal: "We are very excited to announce that our baby, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our children are thrilled to meet their little brother."
In the same statement, the couple thanked the medical staff: "The incredible military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing. We are deeply grateful for all they have done for our family."
Alec is the fourth child of the couple, joining Ewan Blaine, who is nine years old; Vivek, who is six; and Mirabel Rose, who is four.
The birth holds significant historical weight: Alec Neel Vance is the first child born to a sitting vice president in over 150 years in the United States.
The last precedent dates back to April 11, 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax had his son Schuyler Colfax III during the administration of Ulysses S. Grant.
Before Colfax, only John C. Calhoun —with children born in 1826 and 1829— and Hannibal Hamlin —with a son in 1862— had been parents while serving as Vice President.
The pregnancy was announced on January 20, 2026, the same day Vance took office as the 50th vice president under Trump's second presidency, along with the confirmation that they were expecting a boy by the end of July.
The birth aligns with the pronatalist stance that Vance has publicly advocated since the beginning of his term.
At the March for Life on January 24, 2025, the vice president declared, "I want more babies in the United States of America."
The event adds to another milestone in the Trump administration: the White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, gave birth to her second daughter on May 1, 2026, making her the first official in that position to give birth while serving. She returned to her job just days before the birth of Alec Vance.
Vance has also proposed raising the child tax credit from $2,000 to $5,000 per child as part of his agenda of incentives for American families.
