The Cuban catcher Edgar Quero returns to the Major Leagues: the Chicago White Sox called him up from Triple A this Tuesday, as confirmed by journalist Francys Romero, and he is expected to join the team in Texas, where the franchise is playing another series of the season.
The move is in response to the injury of starting receiver Kyle Teel, who has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left ankle sprain.
Teel suffered the mishap in the second inning of Monday's game against the Rangers at Globe Life Field, twisting his ankle during a tag attempt at home plate.
This is not the first time Teel has missed action in 2026: he has already suffered three leg injuries during the season, which has limited his participation to just 19 games, with an average of .190, two home runs, and 14 RBIs.
While Teel remains out—eligible to be reactivated on July 31—Quero will share the responsibilities of catcher with Drew Romo.
The player from Cienfuegos had been sent to Charlotte (Triple A) on June 22, just when Teel returned from a previous knee injury.
In his 15 games with Charlotte, Quero batted .230/.299/.295, a performance that was enough to earn him a spot back on the major league roster.
The 2026 season has been challenging for the Cuban offensively: in 40 games with the White Sox, he has a batting average of .176, one home run, 13 runs batted in, and an OPS of .481.
However, the organization maintains its confidence in him, particularly valuing his defensive skills behind the plate.
Born in Cienfuegos on April 6, 2003, Quero left Cuba in 2019 and was signed in February 2021 by the Los Angeles Angels with a bonus of $200,000.
After being transferred to the White Sox system, he quickly climbed through the minor leagues: in 2022, he was named MVP of the California League with Inland Empire, where he led in slugging (.530) and OPS (.965), with 17 home runs and 75 RBIs in 111 games.
His Major League debut came on April 17, 2025, and his first full season in MLB proved promising: a .268 batting average, five home runs, and 36 runs batted in over 134 games.
In the 2026 Spring Training, he also made a strong impression, with a performance of 3-3, a double, four runs batted in, and a time of 1.85 seconds on a stolen base attempt, according to data collected by specialized media.
The White Sox are in a rebuilding phase and have invested in young prospects like Quero as cornerstones for the future, a gamble that is being tested once again with this return.
