At 10:00 a.m., local Cuban time, opens this Friday, July 24, with the US dollar gaining ground compared to the previous day.

The North American currency exchanges for around 673 Cuban pesos, the euro remains stable at 778 pesos, and the MLC is around 482 pesos, although this last figure should be taken with caution due to the low volume of transactions registered during this time period.

Summary of exchange rates

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 673 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 778 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 482 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The United States dollar (USD)

The US dollar is trading today at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market. This represents an increase of 2 pesos compared to the previous day, when the average value was 671 CUP.

The upward trend of the week is clear: seven days ago, the dollar averaged 655 pesos, which represents an increase of 18 pesos in the past week, equivalent to a rise of 2.7%.

Exchange Rate Evolution

Regarding the monthly comparison, 30 days ago the exchange rate was around 692 pesos, although it is worth noting that this difference may partly reflect adjustments in the index's methodology rather than just market fluctuations.

In the past month, the dollar has fluctuated between a low of 610 and a high of 691 pesos. The demand for dollars remains high among those looking to protect their savings from the depreciation of the peso.

The euro (EUR)

The euro is quoted today at 778 Cuban pesos (CUP), unchanged from the previous session.

Despite the stability of recent hours, the European currency has accumulated a significant gain over the week: seven days ago it was exchanged for 755 pesos, which implies an increase of 23 pesos, or 3% more.

In the monthly comparison, 30 days ago the euro averaged 796 pesos, although, similar to the dollar, this difference may be influenced by methodological adjustments of the index. The range over the last month has fluctuated between 688 and 795 pesos. It exceeds the dollar by 105 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC

The MLC today is around 482 Cuban pesos (CUP), a value that should be considered indicative given the low volume of transactions reported in this range, as indicated by the source's warning.

Regarding the previous day, it has increased by 2 pesos from the 480 CUP recorded yesterday. In the last week, the MLC has risen by 40 pesos from the 442 it marked seven days ago, an increase of 9.1%.

In the last month, it has fluctuated between a minimum of 399 and a maximum of 543 pesos. Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), set today at 598 CUP per dollar and 680 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that govern daily practice in the informal currency market.

The gap between the official and informal exchange rates is 75 pesos for the dollar and 98 pesos for the euro, a difference that highlights the disconnection between the formal economy and the reality faced by Cubans.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.

In the last month, the official dollar has shifted from 574 to 598 CUP and the official euro from 653 to 680 CUP, adjustments that have not managed to close the gap with the parallel market.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every change in the informal market directly affects internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.

The rise of the dollar this Friday, although moderate in absolute terms, adds to an upward trend that in the last week has seen the U.S. currency gain nearly 18 pesos against the Cuban peso.

The informal currency market in Cuba operates outside of state financial institutions, through networks of buying and selling among individuals. Although the Cuban regime does not officially recognize it, it is the market that practically determines the real purchasing power of Cubans.

The CiberCuba Exchange Rate is an index of the informal Cuban market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency buy and sell posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.

The calculation disregards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
