Three people were injured and had to be taken to a hospital on Saturday following the collision of two boats in Biscayne Bay, off of Bay Harbor Islands, in Miami-Dade County, as confirmed by the Police to Local 10 News.
The impact occurred around 1 a.m., near West Broadview Drive and 103rd Street, according to officers from the Bay Harbor Islands Police Department who were present at the scene.
The three victims were aboard one of the two vessels involved. They were treated at a nearby medical facility, although the authorities did not immediately disclose their identities or the severity of their injuries.
The second vessel involved in the collision ended up at Haulover Marina, located nearby. The authorities did not disclose how many people were on board that boat or if any of them were injured.
By dawn this Saturday at 9 a.m., a large part of the area was still cordoned off. One of the vessels remained partially submerged in the bay, with only the structure of the canopy visible above the water.
To prevent the vessel from sinking completely, the Police secured it with a long cable tied to a police vehicle while teams worked at the scene. Subsequently, the boat was towed.
Agents from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) arrived on the scene and took over the investigation of the accident, as this is the state agency responsible for such nautical incidents.
The incident adds to a series of serious accidents recorded in Biscayne Bay during 2026. In March, two fatal accidents shook the area in less than a week: on the 25th of that month, Davide Veglia died and his 14-year-old son was injured when a vessel collided with their boat and fled; four days later, a woman lost her life after losing control of her craft near Nixon Beach Sandbar.
In May, an explosion on a charter vessel near Haulover Sandbar left at least 11 hospitalized and was classified as a Level 2 Mass Casualty Event.
According to statistics from the FWC for 2024, Miami-Dade leads the state of Florida in boating accidents, with 75 cases, 41 injuries, and 8 fatalities recorded that year, out of a total of 685 accidents statewide, 394 injured, and 81 deaths.
