The post from CiberCuba about the challenge posed by the official propagandist Michel Torres Corona to the United States triggered a flood of reactions on Facebook.
In just a few hours, the news garnered over 1,200 comments, the vast majority characterized by sarcasm, mockery, and discredit towards the host of the show Con Filo.
The debate arose after Torres Corona came out in defense of Gretza Sánchez Padrón, the director of the Central Medical Cooperation Unit (UCCM), who was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of State along with the Minister of Health, José Ángel Portal Miranda, and other entities linked to the Cuban medical mission program.
Wearing a CUPET t-shirt, the television presenter a photo of himself alongside the official and stated: "Seeing her name on the new list of those sanctioned by the U.S. government —and its hysterical, lying, and repugnant Secretary of State— only makes me envious. I'm missing that distinction... Let's see if they dare!", referring to the U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
Many readers agreed that Torres Corona exaggerates his own importance by publicly requesting to be included on the sanctions list by the Department of State.
One of the most repeated ideas was that the host "thinks he is too important", while many comments mocked the notion that Washington would even have reasons to pay attention to him.
"Who are you?", "As if it were that important", "The U.S. doesn’t even know you exist", "They don’t even know you at home" and "You're giving yourself too much importance..." were some of the expressions that were frequently repeated, with various variations, throughout the debate.
Another group of users interpreted the post by the official spokesperson as a desperate quest for attention. Several comments pointed out that "what he wants is to be in the spotlight", "he's seeking fame" or "he wants to grab attention at all costs". Others labeled him as a "clown", "frustrated comedian" or "meme", diminishing the seriousness of his challenge.
Responses in a mocking tone about the possibility of him being sanctioned were also abundant. "Don't worry, everything comes", "Everyone has their moment", "Let your will be done" and "Yours will come" were some of the phrases with which readers responded to Torres Corona's provocation.
Several comments suggested that the propagandist lacks the necessary political weight to become a target of international sanctions. Among the most shared opinions were messages such as "The master is sanctioned, not the lackey", "He is too insignificant for that," "Be content with the distinction of sycophant" or "In order to be sanctioned, you first have to be someone important."
Other users resorted to humor to speculate about the host's true intentions. Some hinted that "what he wants is to be taken to the United States," even "if he gets arrested," while others joked that he was seeking "a distinction" that, according to them, he doesn't deserve.
The comments section was also filled with derogatory terms aimed at the host of Con Filo. Readers referred to him as "clown," "loser," "joke," "mouse," "character," and "bootlicker," in addition to questioning his role as one of the main defenders of the Cuban regime in the official media.
Although the humorous tone was clearly predominant, there were also those who interpreted Torres Corona's message as an attempt to publicly reaffirm his loyalty to the regime amid the increasing U.S. sanctions against Cuban institutions and officials.
The reactions indicate that the presenter’s provocation did not go unnoticed on the social media of CiberCuba and eventually became a source of jokes, questions, and a long string of comments that cast doubt on both his political relevance and the extent of his challenge to Washington.
