opens this Monday, July 27, with a mixed outlook.

At 10:00 a.m. (local Cuban time), the US dollar remains unchanged compared to the previous day, while the euro gains ground.

The Freely Convertible Currency also experiences an increase, although its quotation should be taken as indicative due to the low volume of transactions supporting it.

Dollar: Stable at 674 pesos

The U.S. dollar is trading today at 674 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, exactly the same value it registered at the same hour on the previous day.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The U.S. dollar, however, has accumulated a notable gain in the weekly balance: a week ago, it was around 665 pesos, which represents an increase of 8.5 pesos over that period (+1.3%).

In the monthly comparison, the dollar is positioned 48 pesos above the 626 CUP it was at 30 days ago, marking an increase of 7.7%, although this reference may partly reflect methodological adjustments of the index.

In the last 30 days, the currency has fluctuated between a low of 610 and a high of 675 pesos. It continues to set the tone for the informal market amid a context of structural scarcity of foreign exchange.

Euro: rises and approaches 790 pesos

The euro is the main currency in this opening.

The European currency is currently trading at 788 Cuban pesos (CUP), which represents an increase of 3 pesos compared to the 785 CUP reported in the previous session (+0.4%).

In the weekly evolution, the gain is more significant: seven days ago, the euro was around 765 pesos, which means it has risen by 23 pesos in that period (+3%).

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was priced around 725 CUP, the increase is 63 pesos (+8.7%), although this comparison should be viewed with caution due to potential methodological adjustments to the index.

In the last month, the euro has reached a low of 688 and a high of 790 pesos. It has established itself as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, surpassing the dollar by 114 pesos.

MLC: Rise, but with caution

The MLC appears this Monday around 494 Cuban pesos (CUP), compared to 479 CUP from the previous day, marking an increase of 15.5 pesos (+3.2%).

During the week, it has accumulated a gain of 22.5 pesos from the 472 CUP of seven days ago (+4.8%).

However, this data should be taken as indicative: the source warns that the volume of operations supporting this quotation is low during this time period.

Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Summary of informal market rates

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 674 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 788 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 494 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The gap with the official rate

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 601 CUP per dollar and 684 CUP per euro, which remains well below the values that prevail in everyday transactions in the informal currency market.

The difference between the official price and the informal one today reaches 73 pesos in the case of the dollar and 104 pesos in the case of the euro.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains very distant from that of the informal market and fails to meet the real demand for foreign currency from the population.

Why does the gap persist?

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every change in the informal market directly affects domestic prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.

The demand for dollars and euros remains high among those looking to protect their savings, emigrate, import goods, or make purchases in the private sector, while the state banking system is unable to meet that demand.

The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the Cuban informal market created from the automated analysis of thousands of currency trading posts in Telegram and Facebook groups.

The calculation disregards atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each operation based on its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated multiple times a day.
