Laritza Camacho demands that Cuban officials "take off the mask": "It is urgent that they take action."

The Cuban announcer and presenter Laritza Camacho demanded this Tuesday that regime officials abandon their political disguises and fulfill their real responsibilities.

"It is necessary for them to remove their masks and costumes. It is urgent that officials actually perform their duties," he wrote in the post that is circulating on social media.

The message deliberately references the controversy of the “disguise” that shook Cuba a year ago, but it turns it around with surgical precision: if in July 2025 the government tried to portray the poor as imposters, now Camacho points out that it is the officials themselves who are wearing masks.

"I was thinking about the matter of costumes in Cuba. We have already shown that the vulnerable are not disguised, but what about the officials?" the presenter wrote, establishing a direct connection with that scandal.

The origin of this controversy was the then Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marta Elena Feitó Cabrera, who stated before the National Assembly that in Cuba “there are no beggars, only people disguised as beggars”, further suggesting that those who clean windshields or rummage through garbage bins lead an “easy” life.

The public reaction was one of widespread indignation. Díaz-Canel had to step in to address it on July 15, 2025, expressing regret over "the lack of sensitivity regarding the approach to vulnerability," and Feitó resigned from the position the following day under the mounting pressure.

After the scandal, the Cuban government acknowledged over 310,000 individuals in situations of poverty or social vulnerability, a figure that contrasts with the data from 2024, when the State reported 189,000 families and 350,000 individuals in vulnerable conditions within a population of 9.7 million.

Tuesday's post adds to others from Camacho, who has consistently maintained a critical stance against the regime from within the island.

On July 25, she reported that the official measures aim for the regime to "entrench itself in power and luxury", and on July 11, she openly stated that she was “against the Cuban government” and demanded accountability for those who approved ineffective measures.

In June, she urged the leaders to "fill the pots", clean up the garbage, listen to the people, and grant amnesty to political prisoners. She also questioned how those who "have done everything wrong" can guarantee that they will do "everything right".

A broadcaster, actress, and presenter born in Havana in 1967, Camacho is known for her work on the program Mediodía en TV and on Radio Ciudad de La Habana.

Her voice, once linked to state media, has become one of the most direct on the island when it comes to holding the regime accountable for the crisis affecting the population.

“If they cannot resolve the problem, they need to step aside,” he had warned on July 11. The message this Tuesday is the logical continuation of that demand: that officials stop merely acting and finally start functioning.
