The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado asserted this Tuesday that the political transition in Venezuela is getting closer and urged citizens to remain steadfast to "complete the task," during a message broadcast on the occasion of the second anniversary of the presidential elections on July 28, 2024, reported the agency EFE.
The video was shown during a rally organized by her party, Vente Venezuela (VV), in Caracas, the first one organized by that political group in the capital so far in 2026.
"Today we know what we have to do: complete the task. On July 28, 2024, we gave ourselves a mandate, and we are going to fulfill it. Rise up, Venezuela. The transition is coming, and it is with the people, for the people, and with our own hands," stated Machado, winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
The leader described the 2024 elections as "the greatest electoral victory" in the country's history and an "ethical and existential victory." She also accused chavismo of responding with severe repression during the two years following that day.
"They pursued, tortured, humiliated, and killed," Machado denounced while referring to the treatment received by opposition leaders and supporters.
Criticism of the management following the earthquakes
In her statement, Machado also questioned the actions of Delcy Rodríguez's government following the devastating earthquakes on June 24, 2026, which, according to data cited by EFE, resulted in over 5,500 deaths.
"In the face of the catastrophe of the earthquakes, it was the people who saved the people," he stated, contrasting the citizens' solidarity with what he described as a "total lack of humanity and compassion" on the part of the government.
Meanwhile, hundreds of opposition supporters gathered in the Libertador municipality of Caracas, with participation from people who also came from the state of Miranda. During the demonstration, chants could be heard such as: "María Corina, come, your people are here" and "Set the date, we’ll provide the votes."
Vente Venezuela insists on elections and freedom for political prisoners
During the mobilization, Henry Alviárez, national coordinator of Organización de Vente Venezuela, intervened, stating that any process of transition must include a call for free elections and the release of political prisoners.
"There will be no transformation here until these people are out of power, but we cannot talk about democracy if political prisoners still exist," he stated.
Alviárez also expressed his confidence in the role of the United States as a facilitator of the ongoing dialogue process.
Machado supports dialogue but sets conditions
María Corina Machado has been outside of Venezuela since December 2025, when she traveled to Oslo to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. After the earthquakes, she promised to return to the country but reported that Delcy Rodríguez's government closed the airspace to prevent her return. Last Sunday, she publicly reiterated her intention to come back.
On that same day, Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia issued a statement in which they conditionally supported the dialogue process between chavismo and a sector of the opposition led by former deputy Dinorah Figuera.
Both clarified that they did not participate in the "design, construction, and functioning" of that negotiation, although they assured that they will not be "an obstacle to any initiative that produces real progress."
Among the conditions proposed are the release of all political prisoners, the restoration of democratic institutions, and the establishment of a timeline for presidential elections.
