The Cuban actor Armando Tomey coined the term "irreversible neurocastrism" to describe the profound and chronic pain that Cubans in exile feel whenever they are reminded of their homeland.
In a reel posted on her Instagram account, Tomey explains that the phenomenon is triggered by the simplest stimuli, and once the feeling overwhelms her, she can't stop thinking about the island.
«If I drink coffee, I think of Cuba; when I eat, I think of Cuba; when I throw away leftover food, I think of Cuba. I call it irreversible neurocastrism, and that is not yearning, sadness, or nostalgia. It is a deep pain to know that our island is held captive,» stated the actor.
Tomey rejects the idea that this is simply nostalgia and defines Cuba not as a nation, but as "a giant prison drifting aimlessly, hijacked by a group of people who have repressed it for 67 years and left it in total misery."
The actor directed his message to Miguel Díaz-Canel and denounced the humanitarian crisis that the Cuban population is experiencing.
"Díaz-Canel, in Cuba there are people dying in the streets. In Cuba, there are people collecting water from ponds, channels, and lagoons just to bathe and clear out clogged toilets. Díaz-Canel, take all the money you stole from Cuba, you and your cronies, and get the hell out. Go to Russia, to China, to North Korea," he stated.
Tomey demanded one last thing from the Cuban leader: “Let Cuba shape its own destiny”.
This is not the first time that Armando Tomey has made harsh statements against the regime. On July 25, he criticized the "Cuban utopia" invoked by Díaz-Canel and referred to him as a "puppet, clown, and abuser."
On July 4, he published a video with the question "And Cuba, when?". In March, he had publicly denounced that the island "suffers from misery and repression and cries out for freedom."
Armando Tomey is a beloved artist in Cuba. Telenovela fans remember him for his role in Sol de Batey (1985). He emigrated to the United States in 2013, escaping economic hardships and a lack of freedom. He currently resides in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
