At 10:00 a.m., local Cuban time,

The informal currency market in Cuba opens this Thursday, July 30, with a relatively calm outlook, although there is a slight increase in the euro exchange rate.

The American dollar remains unchanged compared to the previous day, while the euro rises by one position, and the Convertible Currency (MLC) shows only a slight movement, with indicative data due to its low trading volume.

The dollar remains steady at 673 pesos

The US dollar is priced today at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, with a buy rate around 670 CUP and a sell rate of 675 CUP.

      Exchange Rate Evolution

It remains unchanged compared to the previous day.

In the weekly comparison, the greenback has risen by two pesos compared to the 671 CUP it was at a week ago, representing an increase of 0.2%.

On a monthly horizon, the exchange rate has risen by 57.5 pesos from 615 CUP 30 days ago, an increase of 9.3%. However, this comparison should be taken with caution, as it may reflect methodological adjustments of the index in addition to the actual market movement. In the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a minimum of 615 CUP and a maximum of 675 CUP.

It continues to set the pace of the informal market amid a context of structural currency shortages.

The euro rises to 786 pesos

The euro is the main currency in this opening.

The European currency is trading today at 786 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying price of 780 CUP and a selling price of 791 CUP.

This represents an increase of one peso compared to the 785 CUP recorded on the previous day.

In the weekly comparison, the euro has gained 7.5 pesos compared to the 778 CUP from seven days ago, an increase of 1%.

Compared to 30 days ago—when it was at 702 CUP—the increase amounts to 84 pesos; a 12% rise, although this figure may include methodological adjustments to the index.

In the last month, the European currency has reached a low of 700 CUP and a high of 790 CUP.

Surpasses the dollar by 113 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

      Summary of exchange rates

      • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 673 CUP.
      • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 786 CUP.
      • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 478 CUP (indicative value).

The MLC is around 478 pesos with indicative data

The MLC is quoted today at around 478 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying price of 449 CUP and a selling price of 507 CUP.

It remains virtually unchanged compared to the previous day.

However, it is important to note that this figure should be regarded as indicative, as the digital currency shows a low volume of transactions during this time period.

In the weekly comparison, the MLC has decreased by two pesos compared to the 480 CUP from seven days ago.

Thirty days ago, it was at 447 CUP, which represents an increase of 31 pesos, although this comparison may reflect methodological adjustments in the index.

In the last month, the MLC has fluctuated between a low of 410 CUP and a high of 543 CUP.

Without a physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

Gap between the informal market and the official rate

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 608 CUP per dollar and 692 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in daily practice in the informal currency market.

The difference between both markets exceeds 65 pesos for the dollar and 94 pesos for the euro.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate continues to be far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency among the population.

As of July, the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 589 to 608 CUP, and the euro from 673 to 692 CUP, adjustments that have not managed to close the gap with the parallel market.

        Context of the informal market

The gap between the official and informal rates reflects the persistent scarcity of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros among the population, whether for emigrating, importing goods, protecting savings, or making purchases in the private sector.

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, each variation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
