A young Cuban identified as Erick remains in critical condition at the University Hospital of Monterrey after suffering burns on almost his entire body during the explosion of the house where he rented a room in the Buenos Aires neighborhood, located south of the capital of Nuevo León.
The accident occurred on the morning of this Thursday, when Erick was preparing to leave for work. According to the Monterrey media Info7, initial reports from neighbors suggest that the young man turned on the light in his room and then used the microwave oven. It was at that moment that a loud explosion occurred, destroying a large part of the upper floor of the building, located on Macario Pérez Street.
The scene that followed was etched in the memory of those who witnessed the event.
According to testimonies gathered by the local media, neighbors saw Erick coming down the stairs with severe burns and parts of his skin peeling off, while desperately calling for help.
Paramedics from the Medical Urgency Regulation Center (CRUM) arrived on site to provide first aid and, after stabilizing him, urgently transferred him to the University Hospital of Monterrey, where he remains under specialized medical care.
The initial investigations by Civil Protection in Monterrey suggest that a possible accumulation of gas inside the home may be the cause of the explosion. However, authorities clarified that the definitive cause will be determined by the ongoing forensic examinations.
The explosion caused significant damage to the second floor of the building and affected at least four nearby homes. The shockwave shattered windows in several houses and caused structural damage to a neighboring wall.
Experts from the State Attorney General's Office conducted inspections at the location and began gathering testimonies to clarify what happened. According to Info7, the property owner did not show up at the residence during the proceedings.
Neighbors from the neighborhood described Erick as a hardworking, kind, and respectful young man. They stated that he had been renting a room on the upper floor of the house for about a year and that he worked at a motorcycle company located in the same area.
On the ground floor of the building lived another couple of tenants, who were not at home when the explosion occurred, and therefore remained unharmed.
After the incident, several residents expressed their concern regarding the state of the gas distribution network in the neighborhood. One of them stated that he reported a leak in front of his home about six months ago and claimed that the repair made by the distribution company was only temporary. Following the explosion, company personnel came to the site; however, according to the neighbors, the inspection was limited to the affected home and did not extend to the facilities of nearby houses.
So far, the authorities have not issued an updated medical report on the condition of the young Cuban nor have they informed whether relatives or representatives from the Cuban consulate in Mexico have come to provide assistance.
