The Cuban influencer Flor de Cuba posted a reel on her Instagram account in which she responded sarcastically to those who accuse her of "abandoning" her children in Cuba while she resides in the United States.
The trigger was a comment that summarized the criticism as follows: "While she enjoys a good life in the United States, her abandoned children in Cuba are suffering from hunger and misery." Flor took that accusation and turned it into the main thread of an ironic story about her oldest son's birthday, who has just turned 13 years old.
Far from depicting a scene of abandonment, the video narrates how the teenager celebrated his birthday at the Meliá Varadero hotel, surrounded by grandmothers, parents-in-law, his girlfriend, his best friend, and several other family members, while enjoying a jacuzzi, swimming pool, diving, and kayaking.
"As you can see, there my son is very, very, very neglected in a jacuzzi at a five-star hotel, in a sad and bitter life of a victim and an unhappy child, unprotected, forsaken, and without receiving a shred of love," the influencer recounted with deliberate dramatic exaggeration.
The hotel staff also organized a special birthday celebration for him, a detail that Flor added to the narrative with the same mocking tone: “the workers, outraged to see such suffering, decided to pay a special tribute to the unhappy child.”
Towards the end of the reel, the influencer briefly set aside irony to offer a more direct criticism of the logic of her detractors.
"There are no bad mothers who live with their children. There are no good mothers who live far away. That does not exist," she stated, challenging the notion that physical presence alone defines the quality of motherhood.
She also listed situations of real abuse that, according to her, remain invisible under that binary logic: "It doesn't matter that my mother hits me or allows my stepfather to abuse me. It doesn't matter that I have no roof, that I have nothing... the only thing that matters is that my mother is by my side."
Flor de Cuba, whose real name is Flor Danay Hernández Ochoa, decided to settle in Miami at the end of December 2024, leaving her two children in Cuba in the care of their grandparents. Since then, she has repeatedly faced this type of criticism, to which she has responded in various ways.
In December 2024, she had already responded to similar claims by stating that she was not "to blame for the things that happen in Cuba." In July 2025, she defended herself again against comments questioning her role as a mother, and in April of this year announced her third pregnancy, the first with her partner Alexx 13K, which reignited the debate.
Family separation due to migration is a widespread reality in the Cuban exile community, where many parents emigrate to support their children and relatives with the expectation of reuniting with their children years later, in a process that can be prolonged indefinitely.
