A new tropical wave, expected to depart from the western coast of Africa on Tuesday, is starting to attract the attention of meteorologists due to the possibility of developing as it moves westward across the tropical Atlantic over the next week.
The National Hurricane Center of the United States (NHC) reported that some development is possible between the middle and the end of next week, as the system moves through the eastern or central tropical Atlantic.
For now, the odds remain low. The NHC estimates nearly a 0% chance of formation over the next 48 hours and a 20% chance over the next seven days.
The wave is still expected to emerge from Africa, so it is currently in a very early stage of monitoring.
The advisory does not indicate a specific path towards the Caribbean or a specific threat to Cuba or Florida; however, it is important to remain vigilant.
The forecast indicates that the system will move westward through the eastern and central Atlantic, so it will be necessary to monitor its development over the coming days.
The watch emerges just as tropical activity begins to gain more attention in the Atlantic.
The NHC had already warned at the beginning of August that, although the season had started off quietly, this month typically marks an increase in cyclonic activity and that the climatic peak of the season occurs around September 10.
The new area under observation arises after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States (NOAA) maintained its forecast of a less active than normal season.
The agency forecasts between seven and 13 named storms, of which two to six could develop into hurricanes, and up to two may reach major intensity.
NOAA calculates a 75% chance that the season will be below normal, but it has emphasized that a lower number of cyclones does not eliminate the risk of any system impacting populated areas.
